I made a mood board collecting reference images. I felt had matched the tone I was going for. With this in mind, I created the storyboard to keep track of the multiple moving elements. I then proceeded to the final clean sketch where I ended up choosing the first one.
What I had to keep in mind for this project is that we were working within 1920 x 1080 px. We would then have to resize the frame to. 800 x 600 px. Therefore, I had to keep most of the action in the centre.
The illustration was made in Illustrator. I put detail in through lots of gradients, blending modes and shapes.
In my first version I didn’t like the phone screen, so I changed it to give it a more old school iPod UI look. With my second version, I removed the stars because I needed them to be an animated element and it was easier to execute that in After Effects. I also added shadows which this gave it more detail.
After my first version, I received feedback that I should add more motion elements in the background. I decided to add the shooting twinkling stars to achieve this. I needed to fix the fan and leaves due to them moving too fast. So I slowed down the fan and had the leaves sway more subtle.
